Environment and Sustainability

Our commitment to the environment profoundly impacts the way we conduct mining operations, and we are focused on making positive environmental commitments for the benefit of future generations.

We employ sustainable mining practices, rehabilitate mined land, and ensure our operations have minimal environmental impact.

By adopting new energy sources, we are transitioning to hybrid and electric vehicles, including battery-powered trucks, to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

At DTP, we take an active and energetic approach to our decarbonisation and sustainability commitments.

Commitment to Emission Reduction

We aim to reduce our emissions by 40% for scope 1 & 2 and by 20% in absolute terms for scope 3 by 2030, using 2021 as our baseline, validated by the SBTi.

Efficiency benchmarking

We benchmark sites to identify the most fuel or energy-efficient machines (trucks, excavators, drills), beyond just OEM technical datasheets and promises.

Leveraging Technical Improvements

We leverage the latest technical advancements (smart drilling, load assist, hydraulic control) to boost productivity while reducing emissions.

Equipment Investment & Fleet Renewal

Our equipment investment program and fleet renewal plan are prioritized by total cost of ownership and the amount of CO2 saved.

Electrical Haul Truck Trials

We are running trials with electric widebody haul trucks to measure benefits and required skill changes before broader implementation.

OEM Partnerships

We collaborate with major OEMs to stay updated on their electrification roadmaps and advocate for practical, quickly available solutions.

Lightweight Component Design

We design and source lightweight components to cut fuel consumption while increasing volume, complemented by enhanced monitoring systems to optimize payload.

Best Rebuild Practices

We employ best rebuild practices for machines and components to extend equipment lifetime, supported by in-house maintenance expertise and partnerships with remanufacturing spare parts providers.

Technological Monitoring

We continuously monitor evolving technologies to make context-specific decisions, considering maturity and trade-offs (retrofitting, hybridization, electrification, dynamic/static charging, batteries).

On-Site Best Practices

We promote best practices (road maintenance, optimal filling, engine idling, fragmentation) through training and management to minimize fuel burn and maximize efficiency.

Future-Facing Projects

We prioritize extraction of transition minerals and projects in regions with low-carbon or renewable energy grids.

These actions reflect our unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship and our proactive efforts to drive sustainability in our mining operations.

FULLY ELECTRIC TRUCK

DTP recently deployed 4 fully electric SANY trucks that will operate on the ROMpad at the Kibali Gold Mine project — a groundbreaking achievement and a first for DTP!

The SKT105E trucks, featuring two electric motors with a peak power of 740 kW and a 420-kWh battery capacity, are the first battery-electric equipment to be used on a DTP site. This advancement represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future, enabling us to reduce our carbon footprint and enhance sustainability in mining operations.

The project is projected to save up to 900 tons of CO2 annually, cutting our carbon footprint by up to 80% compared to current solutions for this specific application. These decarbonization successes are achieved using green electricity, primarily sourced from our client’s hydropower installation.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable mining practices and aligns perfectly with our vision for a greener, more responsible future.
